LADA es una marca de automóviles baratos y de bajo consumo perteneciente al grupo automotriz ruso АвтоВАЗ (AvtoVAZ, que es un acrónimo que significa básicamente “Manufacturera automovilística del Volga“), esta empresa tiene su origen en un “joint venture” celebrado en 1966 entre la antigua Unión Soviética y la Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino (FIAT) y que, hoy por hoy, AvtoVAZ fabrica alrededor de 750.000 unidades al año, y según el ranking de la Organización Internacional de Fabricantes de Automóviles (OICA), de los 48 constructores de automóviles existentes todo el Mundo, AvtoVAZ ocupa el numero 17.

La fábrica central y la casa matriz de AvtoVAZ se encuentra en la ciudad industrial de Tolyatti, ubicada en la generosa cuenca del río Volga a casi mil kilómetros al sureste de Moscú (Distrito Federal del Volga – Óblast de Samara).
La antigua ciudad de “Stavropol del Volga” fue rebautizada en 1964 como Tolyatti en honor a Palmiro Togliatti secretario general del Partido Comunista Italiano fallecido ese mismo año en Yalta mientras estaba de vacaciones. (Ahora entenderán por qué en la llave original de los llavines de las puertas viene ésta inscripción: "толъятти" = Tolyatti = Togliatti)

El 8 de diciembre del 2007 se anunció en Tolyatti con bombos y platillos una alianza estratégica entre AvtoVAZ y la automotora francesa Renault, para acelerar el desarrollo tecnológico del constructor AvtoVAZ (con la incorporación de nuevas cadenas de montaje e intercambio de unidades motrices y tecnología) y revivir y fortalecer la imagen de la marca LADA como marca líder del segmento “C” entiéndase: automóviles sedán para clase media. A cambio, Renault será dueña del 25% de AvtoVAZ.
